MONTICELLO Senior
Center
The health insurance plans of almost 400,000
older adults in Minnesota will be affected next year – is yours one of
them? If so, you would have already received a letter from your current
health insurance carrier. Come to the senior center on Thursday, November
8 at 10 a.m. to learn what a Cost Plan is and why it is ending in 66 Minnesota
counties. By the date of this very informative presentation, all the
details should be worked out. By attending, you will be able to
understand the new and different Medicare health insurance options that will be
available to you. Learn what is important to consider when selecting a
new plan and find out what to do next. There is no charge to attend this
session and you do need to sign up in advance at the senior center,
763-295-2000. You will receive nonbiased information presented by Duane
Gates in collaboration with the Central Minnesota Council on Aging.
A limited number of appointments are available
for those affected by the Cost Plan elimination to meet one on one with a
trained health insurance counselor volunteer. The volunteer will look at
your individual health needs, including prescriptions, to help you find health
insurance that will benefit you the most. Appointments are available on
November 9 and 12 – call me soon to schedule yours.
A presentation we have coming up soon could
really benefit you financially. Worried that your assets might be
depleted on long term care costs? Medical Assistance may pay for your
care costs. Attend a presentation at the senior center on Tuesday,
October 30 at 10:30 a.m. to find out the rules for Medical Assistance
eligibility and how assets may be protected, especially for your spouse.
There is no charge to attend. Presenter, Jill Adkins, is an Elder Law
Attorney at the Gries Lenhardt Allen law firm in St. Michael and has 30 years of experience. Contact the senior center to sign
up in advance so we know how many people to plan for.
Plan to come to the center to hear a presentation
that is sure to captivate your attention. Doug Ohman is a well-known
speaker, storyteller, and photographer with strong roots in Minnesota. He
will be taking you on a virtual Southern Prairie Tour where you can enjoy the
history and charm along the Minnesota River as we make our way to Pipestone and
other interesting towns and sites. This free presentation will be held at
the senior center on Friday, October 12 at 10:30 a.m. Please register at
the center in advance in person or call us at 763-295-2000.
People wanting to attend the Parkinson Support
Group on Tuesday, October 2 do not have to sign up in advance. This group
is designed for people with Parkinson disease and their care partners.
Heidi Ewing does an excellent job facilitating this group and there is always
support and something to learn. The group meets from 1:30-3 p.m.
The Writing Group will also meet on October
2. If you have an interest in writing, please check this group out, which
meets at 1 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to pick up litter on the
senior center’s adopted stretch of road on Thursday, October 11. Let us
know if you can help and plan on meeting at the center at 9 a.m. on the 11th to
carpool to the starting points. Each person will walk approximately one mile
and will be provided with a safety vest, gloves, and garbage bags.
Marv Kuechle was the winner of last weeks
cribbage tournament, with Earl Austad coming in second and Marlo Samuelson
third. The monthly 500 card tournament was held last week and Norm Olson
won. Win Causby came in second place and Dennis Sullivan third.
There was a tie for first place between Katie Sterriker and Jim Weisner in the
last euchre tournament and Dale Chamberlin had the next highest score.
As we shift into fall, I hope you will get out
of the chill and come to the senior center where the coffee pot is on and the
company is great.
