Engaging Parent Mentors to Increase Participation of
Eligible Children in Medicaid and CHIP

Thursday, November 8, 2018
2:00 p.m - 3:00 p.m. ET
More than 3.3 million American children lack health insurance. Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) have made great strides in getting more eligible children enrolled in public health insurance programs. Despite this progress, more can be done to enroll the remaining uninsured.

In some communities, parent mentors are connecting children to health coverage. Parent mentors educate families with uninsured children about health insurance options, and assist with completing and submitting applications to get these families covered. They can also provide guidance on identifying medical and dental homes and community pharmacies for children, provide assistance and referrals to successfully address social determinants of children’s health, and act as a liaison between the families and the state. This approach is closing the remaining gap between the eligible children who are insured and those who are not. Parents who have at least one Medicaid or CHIP-enrolled child can serve as mentors to parents of uninsured children during the application and renewal process.

The Connecting Kids to Coverage National Campaign works closely with partners and community-based organizations who specialize in conducting Medicaid and CHIP outreach and enrollment efforts, including groups engaging parent mentors in their efforts to enroll and retain children in free or low-cost health coverage.

Join us on Thursday, November 8 at 2:00 p.m. ET as we explore using parent mentors to assist families with enrolling in Medicaid and CHIP, retaining coverage and finding resources for addressing social determinants of health.

Our discussion will be guided by Dr. Glenn Flores, Chief Research Officer and Director of the Health Services Research Institute at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, who will share his expertise and data-driven insight into proven strategies and best practices for engaging parent mentors in Medicaid and CHIP outreach and enrollment activities.
