It’s no time to celebrate

A decrease in coronavirus cases and a downtick in hospitalizations in Massachusetts seem to suggest that the state is turning a corner on the worrisome Delta surge.

But experts told my colleague Martin Finucane that it’s too soon to pop open the champagne.

“I’ve learned not to declare victory over this tricky virus ... it has surged back several times before,” Dr. Paul Sax, clinical director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said in an e-mail.

Some models suggest the virus could make a a comeback in the winter.
