Inpatient Hospital Utilization and Payment Data
CMS has released the Hospital Inpatient Utilization and Payment Public
Use Files (PUF) with data for 2016.
The Inpatient PUF includes summarized information on inpatient
discharges paid for under the Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System
(IPPS) for Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries. The data include
discharges, average Medicare payments and average hospital charges organized
by hospital provider and Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MS-DRG).
It provides data on more than 3,000 hospital providers who collectively
received $109.1 billion in Medicare payments in 2016.
Inpatient PUF users will be able to make
comparisons between individual hospital-level charges and payments within
local markets, and nationwide, for services that might be furnished in
connection with a particular inpatient stay. The 2016 data and
supplemental information are available at: https://www.cms.gov/Research-Statistics-Data-and-Systems/Statistics-Trends-and-Reports/Medicare-Provider-Charge-Data/Inpatient.html
