Memorial Hermann and Cigna have agreed to extend
their contract through April 30 to allow more time for negotiations, the insurer
said Tuesday.
The contract between the hospital system and the
nation’s fourth-largest insurer was set to end in March, affecting 178,000 plan
members and 1,460 affiliated doctors in the network.
“We
remain hopeful that with more time, we can reach an agreement that provides
access to quality care at an affordable cost,” Cigna and Memorial Hermann said
in a joint statement.
If Cigna and Memorial Hermann are not able to
reach an agreement, Memorial Hermann would become out-of-network for Cigna's
commercial customers starting May 1, according to the statement. The contract
disagreement between Cigna and Memorial Hermann does not affect Cigna's
Medicare Advantage plans at this time.
