With World Elder Abuse Awareness Day less than
two weeks away, we hope you will join us and our partners for a series of
virtual events on combating the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older
adults.
Elder Justice
Coordinating Council Meeting
The Elder Justice
Coordinating Council (EJCC) brings together leaders from
across the federal government to address issues of elder justice
nationally. Council members include the leaders of federal departments,
agencies, and entities administering programs related to abuse, neglect, or
financial exploitation.
The EJCC's next meeting take place virtually on June 10. The
meeting will focus on scams, fraud, and the increased risk of abuse
due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the physical distancing of at-risk
populations.
2020 WEAAD Global
Summit
Registration is now open for the 6th WEAAD Global Summit
convened by the National Adult Protective Services Association, the National
Center for Victims of Crime, and the International Network for the
Prevention of Elder Abuse.
The summit will include remarks by WEAAD founded Dr. Elizabeth
Podnieks, a media panel, and discussions on cybercrime during the
coronavirus pandemic, identity theft, reporting to APS, and Elder Fraud
Protection and Response Networks. The summit will also include a
presentation on HelpVul - a Department of Justice-funded project to create
a financial abuse reporting portal connecting financial institutions and APS.
WEAAD 2020
Webinar: Upholding Justice for Older Americans
Elder abuse is a global issue with global solutions. On
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), partners from across the federal
government will come together for a national conversation about the
prominent elder justice issues, trends, and resources available to
promote awareness, provide support, and offer solutions in upholding
justice for Older Americans.
Hear from experts at the Administration for Community
Living, National Center on Elder Abuse, Elder Justice Initiative at the
Department of Justice, Social Security Administration, Security and
Exchange Commission, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the
National Center on Law & Elder Rights. Hear how they are each
addressing the current impact of COVID-19 on older adults and how they
are prioritizing their needs.

Lifting up Voices:
Law Enforcement WEADD Celebration
The U.S. Department of Justice will commemorate World Elder
Abuse Awareness Day. with an event highlighting the important role of law
enforcement in combating elder abuse across the county. The event will
feature Officer Steven McGhee of the Paradise Valley Police Department in
Arizona and staff from the National Center on Elder Abuse and the DOJ's
Elder Justice Initiative and Office of Community Oriented Policing
Services.
