Existing COVID-19 shots less potent against new variants

A laboratory study showed Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine was about two-thirds less potent against the coronavirus variant first identified in South Africa than it was against the original variant, according to a letter published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Moderna also published a letter in NEJM revealing it tested its COVID-19 vaccine against variants discovered in South Africa, UK and Denmark and found a sixfold drop in neutralizing antibodies when the vaccine was tested against "the full panel of mutations."
