An advisory panel for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention voted today to recommend...

 ...

an extra dose of Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine at least six months after the second dose for people 65 and older, residents of long-term care facilities, and people ages 50 to 64 who have underlying medical conditions. Boosters can also be given to younger people with underlying medical conditions who want one.

Though the extra doses can be helpful for people who are at higher risk for severe illness with COVID-19, experts say getting people vaccinated in the first place is still the top priority.

“We can give boosters to people, but that’s not really the answer to this pandemic,” said Dr. Helen Keipp Talbot of Vanderbilt University. “Hospitals are full because people are not vaccinated. We are declining care to people who deserve care because we are full of unvaccinated COVID-positive patients.”
