The June 2021[2]
Medicaid/CHIP enrollment snapshot shows more than an estimated 83 million

Medicaid and CHIP. This represents an increase of 433,963 compared to

The COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) continues to play a
significant role in Medicaid/CHIP enrollment, which is why CMS continues to
develop tools and strategies to support operations and enrollees in times
of crisis, including granting states additional temporary flexibilities in
their Medicaid and CHIP operations.

Medicare
As of October 2021, the total Medicare enrollment is
63,964,675. Original Medicare enrollment is 36,045,321, and Medicare
Advantage and Other Health Plan enrollment is 27,919,354. This includes
enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans with and without prescription drug
coverage. Medicare Part D enrollment is 49,141,158, which includes
enrollment in stand-alone prescription drug plans as well as Medicare
Advantage plans that offer prescription drug coverage. This enrollment
information is updated monthly and can be viewed here: https://data.cms.gov/summary-statistics-on-beneficiary-enrollment/medicare-and-medicaid-reports/medicare-monthly-enrollment
[1] Over 11 million individuals are
dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, so are counted in the enrollment
figures for both programs. As a result, adding the enrollment figures for
the programs means these individuals are counted twice. The total of 135 million
only counts dually eligible individuals once.
[2] Enrollment data for Medicare and
Medicaid/CHIP are compiled on different timelines owing to the unique
nature of each program. There is typically a delay in publishing Medicaid
and CHIP enrollment data due to states accounting for retroactive
enrollment and data lags.
