Experts Say Not to Panic as Variant BA.5 Takes Hold in Dallas

With the spread of the contagious BA.5 variant, he CDC moved the city’s threat level to red. Everyone is now recommended to wear masks indoors and on public transportation.

Will Maddox writes: “Two variants of omicron, BA.4 and BA.5, now account for about 75 to 80 percent of the cases being sequenced by UTSW, according to Dr. James Cutrell, an associate professor at UT Southwestern and the program director of the infectious disease fellowship. (The majority of the new infections is the more recent BA.5.)”

While it does seem like it's resulting in fewer hospitalizations and deaths, researchers are finding that every time someone is re-infected with COVID, they've increased their chances of contracting long COVID, where symptoms can last for months.

The upshot? Be prepared to get another booster sometime soon, mask up, and stay away from other people if you're feeling ill.
