New KFF Abortion Resources Offer Up-to-date Information About the Current Policy Landscape for Abortion Access in the U.S.

On June 24^th, the constitutional right to abortion and the federal standard of abortion access established by Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey was overturned by the Supreme Court, eliminating the federal standard for abortion access. It is now left to the states to decide whether to ban, limit, or protect abortion access. Since the ruling, many states have quickly moved to fully ban abortion and to accelerate the implementation of these bans. Others have actively moved to uphold and broaden abortion access in their states. The new KFF Dashboard on Abortion in the U.S. covers the latest developments on abortion access and bans, taking a closer look at state level policies on abortion.

The Dashboard also features other resources on abortion from KFF. A new publication, Key Facts on Abortion in the United States, provides answers to the key questions about abortion in the United States and presents data and information about abortion collected before the overturn of Roe v. Wade, providing a baseline for assessing future changes in abortion laws across the nation.

Also new is Abortion Decision Renews Questions About Employer Access to Health Information, which takes a fresh look at employers’ ability to access abortion information when their health insurance plans cover abortion services and/or include travel compensation. With some states criminalizing entities who assist in abortions, employers and providers may face legal problems and existing laws like HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) may be limited in their privacy protections.

The Dashboard also includes the following information:

As of the end of June, medication abortion via telehealth was available in 22 states and DC
A majority of states have at least one restriction on health insurance coverage for abortion services
Most of the general public (73%) opposes making it a crime for doctors to perform abortions

This Dashboard is an ongoing project that will be updated with new legislation, litigation, analysis and research on abortion access.
