Those who've avoided COVID so far are 'playing a game of Russian roulette'

Lucky. Thankful. Surprised. Nervous. Invincible.

These are some of the words used to describe how it feels to be among the minority of Americans who have yet to contract COVID, my colleague Camille Caldera reported.

More than 1,500 respondents to a Globe callout who remain COVID-free — so far — said the experience feels like they are evading a stalker, running from a monster, or playing a round of roulette. Nearly all but a handful are fully vaccinated and have continued to take some kind of precautions, like masking and distancing.

But the virus is still around, many acknowledged. “I feel like it’s circling closer and closer, like a rabid dog,” said Ilana Hardesty, 60, of Watertown.
