The spread of COVID-19 is having a dramatic impact on economic
conditions across the US, but some areas will suffer more than others. Metro
areas that rely on industries affected by social distancing, such as travel,
hotels, entertainment, restaurants, and personal care, risk the biggest job
losses. In addition, the large drop in oil prices is likely to significantly
affect areas that rely on oil production. The map shows the metro areas with
large shares of jobs in these highly affected industries. According to our
analysis, Las Vegas will probably be the most affected metro area in the
country. Other vacation destinations and oil-producing metro areas will be
hard-hit as well. These areas will experience a longer, more severe
recession.
