Out-of-network providers charge more for COVID-19
tests
AHIP urged lawmakers to set a "reasonable market-based
pricing benchmark" for out-of-network COVID-19 tests after survey data
from its 22 members showed price gouging for such tests has worsened since a
July poll. While a COVID-19 test costs $130 on average in the commercial market,
out-of-network tests cost more than $185 and "between 9% and 16% of
out-of-network test claims charged more than $390 (three times the average
cost)," according to an AHIP report.
