Experts underestimated EHR impact on clinician
burnout
Health informatics experts underestimated the degree to which the
quick transition to EHRs would cause clinician burnout after implementation of
the HITECH Act in 2009, but they overestimated potential harms from abuse and
fraud detection algorithms, according to a retrospective study published in the
Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. Experts in 2009 made
several recommendations that may have helped to mitigate some of the impact on
clinician burnout, but few have been implemented, the study authors noted.
