Walensky unveils CDC plan against COVID-19 variants
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky discussed a multiagency attack plan
intended to halt the spread of the three biggest COVID-19 variant threats --
B.1.1.7, which originated in the UK and is roughly 50% more transmissible and
about 30% to 50% more virulent, B.1.351, the strain from South Africa, and the
P.1 variant that originated in Brazil. Under the action plan co-written with
the CDC's Dr. Henry Walke and Director Anthony Fauci of the National Institute
of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Walensky said the primary goal is to
reinforce public vigilance about mitigation strategies to limit virus
circulation, with the agency strongly advising against nonessential travel.
