Dementia, MCI diagnosis linked to attempted suicide risk

Older adults with a recent diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment had a 73% higher risk of attempted suicide, while those recently diagnosed with dementia had a 44% greater risk, compared with peers without one of the diagnoses, according to a study published in JAMA Psychiatry. Connecting newly diagnosed patients with a psychotherapist or psychiatrist could help mitigate feelings of depression and decrease suicidal ideation, says neuropsychologist Jami Halpern.
