A pig's kidney worked in a human body
Why it matters: According to the Health Resources and Services Administration,
there are more
than 106,000 people on the national transplant waiting list, and 17
people die every day while waiting for an organ transplant. For many years,
animal-to-human transplants have been seen as a promising solution to the organ
shortage, but progress has been incremental and the public's bioethical
objections have been numerous. The news that surgeons were able to temporarily
affix a pig's kidney to a human body and got it to work is a milestone in the
quest for xenotransplantation. --Evan
