In
the Elder Justice Newsletter, we highlight citations, including deficiencies
related to abuse, neglect, and substandard care, that have been identified as
not causing any resident harm. The
goal of this brief newsletter is to shed light on the issue of so-called “no
harm” deficiencies, which typically result in no fine or penalty to the nursing
home.
This issue of the Elder Justice Newsletter is dedicated to nursing
home residents receiving dangerous and unnecessary antipsychotic drugs across
the United States.
This
issue focuses on the following “no harm” violations:
- Black box warning: Unnecessary psychotropics given to
resident living with dementia.
- Why am I so tired all the time?: Residents drugged without
consent.
- Improper diagnosis: Resident receives antipsychotic without
clinical indication for its use .
- Medication as needed... for whom?: Psychotropic medications
continued beyond 14 days.
- "End date: Indefinite": Director of nursing doesn't
know drug rules.
- Short cut: Nursing home resorts to APs before implementing
behavioral interventions.
