The head of a hospital trade group on
Thursday told the Legislature’s Joint Committee on COVID-19 and Emergency
Preparedness that hospitals in Massachusetts have seen a "terrifying
increase" in hospitalizations in the past month.
Steve Walsh, president and chief executive officer of the Massachusetts
Health & Hospital Association, said the surge in cases and staffing
shortages are stretching hospitals thin, just as the Omicron variant has
been detected locally.
Medical facilities around Massachusetts and Rhode
Island are already grappling with staffing shortages and a
crunch on available beds.
Here's the good news: Public health officials stand by the effectiveness
of the vaccines (and boosters) against severe illness from Delta and Omicron.
"The message remains clear," Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday.
"If you are unvaccinated, get vaccinated, and particularly in the
arena of Omicron, if you are fully vaccinated, get your booster shot.”
