HHS News Releases Week of March 20, 2022

HHS Announces Nearly $44 Million to Strengthen Mental Health and Substance Use Services for Populations at Risk for or Living with HIV/AIDS March 18, 2022   Today, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), announced three funding opportunities to strengthen mental health and substance use services for individuals at risk for or living with HIV/AIDS. Totaling $43.7 million dollars, the funding opportunities reflect the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to providing accessible, evidence-based, culturally appropriate substance use prevention, treatment and recovery services to all as part of HHS’s new Overdose Prevention Strategy. Secretary Becerra and Ambassador Tai Reaffirm Administration’s Commitment to Addressing Anti-Asian Hate and Gender-Based Violence on One-Year Anniversary of the Atlanta Spa Shootings March 16, 2022   Washington D.C. – Today, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra and U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai, Co-Chairs of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) and President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (PACAANHPI), issued a joint statement on the one-year anniversary of the tragic Atlanta spa shootings on March 16, 2021, in which a gunman targeted three separate Asian-owned businesses in Georgia and killed eight people, including six women of Asian descent. HHS Announces Funding for Substance Use Treatment and Prevention Programs March 15, 2022   Today, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), is announcing two grant programs totaling $25.6 million that will expand access to medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder and prevent the misuse of prescription drugs. New HHS Study in JAMA Pediatrics Shows Significant Increases in Children Diagnosed with Mental Health Conditions from 2016 to 2020 March 14, 2022   A new U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) study published in the American Medical Association’s journal JAMA Pediatrics exit disclaimer icon reports significant increases in the number of children diagnosed with mental health conditions.
