China Faces Worst COVID-19 Outbreak Since Start of Pandemic

China is the last country to enforce a strict COVID-zero policy, where any positive cases trigger mass lockdowns. Now the Chinese government is sending some 51 million people into lockdown after 1,437 positive cases were reported across dozens of cities — four times as many cases as last week. The lockdowns are affecting the northeastern province Jilin and the southern cities Shenzhen and Dongguan. Shenzhen, China’s Silicon Valley, is a key port, and its lockdown will hamper companies headquartered there including Huawei and Tencent, along with Apple supplier Foxconn’s two major factories.
