Being real on social media was hard
Why it matters: Social media platforms hold unlimited
potential for connecting people. They also are a breeding ground for extreme
vanity and, in many cases, intentional or unintentional misrepresentation. A
new app, BeReal, is trying to promote greater online authenticity by prompting
users at random times to take unfiltered photos and share them. The app is gaining
popularity among college students, but some wonder if attemping online
authenticity is futile, as "realness" is a constantly changing social
construct.
