Preparing Families, Saving Lives

The entire American Red Cross family extends our gratitude to everyone who has participated in our Sound The Alarm event so far this month! Together, we have met our matching gift goal to raise $250,000! Thanks to the generosity of the Dotson Family Fund, these funds will go twice as far to help families prepare for, respond to and recover from devastating home fires. And our efforts won't end there: Sound the Alarm is running all throughout the month of May! Learn more about how you can get involved and stay safe from home fires.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to show our support for those experiencing mental health challenges, raise awareness and visibility about mental health and to spread the word that help is available.

Meet Susan Romano

Meet Susan Romano

Susan Romano is grateful for the blood donors that make sure that hospital shelves are stocked in times of need. She shared her story with the Red Cross and teaches the value of the gift given by generous donors to her children: “I was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) at 16 years old. From the time of my diagnosis until the completion of my two years of chemotherapy and radiation, I required about 25 blood transfusions and about 10 platelet transfusions. These transfusions were critical to my treatment and my ability to be in remission from my cancer."

"Around 17 years later, after I gave birth to my second daughter I experienced some complications and required four more blood transfusions that again saved my life. Without the generosity of those who have donated, I would not be here today. I owe my life to those who have taken the time to donate blood and platelets. I have been able to complete school and become a pediatric nurse practitioner, get married and have children of my own. I am eternally grateful to be given this gift of life thanks to so many others. I always make sure to share with my children that their mom is here today due to the wonderful gifts I have been given by blood donors.“ Please schedule an appointment to give today.

Why I Give

Meet Toni Holland

Meet Tiffany Circle Member Toni Holland

“In 1982, I was serving in Korea when my mom became worried when she hadn’t heard from me. She contacted the Red Cross who was able to verify through my commanding officer that I was okay,” said Tony Holland. “I feel great comfort that the Red Cross is there for families when they need to connect – it’s a big deal for military parents to have that service.”

Toni Holland learned many important lessons during her years of military service in the U.S. Navy. Now, she’s a member of the American Red Cross Tiffany Circle, a community of women committed to advancing our mission through gifts of time, talent and treasure.

Gail

Each May, our nation reflects on the tremendous service of our heroic men and women in uniform and honors the sacrifices of America’s fallen service members on Memorial Day. Here at the American Red Cross, our mission was born on the battlefield through Clara Barton’s care for Civil War soldiers. Today, we are proud to continue Clara’s legacy of service by supporting the U.S. military community from the time service members take their oaths to when they navigate their lives as veterans. I am deeply inspired by the strength and selflessness exemplified by our military members and their families – and I am profoundly thankful for the compassionate support you show them as a part of our Red Cross community.
