July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month While arthritis most often affects adults, inflammatory and rheumatic diseases can develop in children under 18. Managing juvenile arthritis can be difficult for affected children and their parents.    CDC has resources designed to help you learn more about juvenile arthritis, including the CDC Childhood Arthritis page (Spanish translated version also available). This page describes the signs and symptoms of childhood arthritis and how it is diagnosed.     PLACES INTERACTIVE TOOL: Did you know arthritis prevalence estimates for adults ages 18 and up are available by county, place, census tract, and ZIP Code Tabulation Area?    The online PLACES tool provides interactive maps and model-based estimates of 29 chronic disease outcomes, including arthritis, high blood pressure, asthma, and cancer. The tool is now listed on the CDC Arthritis Partner Tools page.        Newly Translated Arthritis Pages CDC Arthritis now offers several web pages that are translated for Spanish-speaking audiences. Artritis reumatoide Artrosis Fibromialgia Gota Artritis infantil Directrices para la actividad física   Datos breves sobre la artritis ¿Cómo hago ejercicio de manera segura si tengo artritis?   Success Story: Virginia Department of Health Interactive Map Virginia Department of Health Arthritis Program partnered with the Department of Conservation Recreation (DCR) to create an interactive map of local park pathways in Virginia, which is available on the Virginia Department of Health website and Google Maps.   DCR sent a request for locations of local walking trails that meet the specific requirements for the Walk With Ease (WWE) program, along with information about WWE, to 158 parks and recreation directors in Virginia, the Virginia Trails Alliance Group, Virginia Department of Transportation bike-ped coordinators, and the Greenways and Trails e-newsletters.   This outreach resulted in a list of 218 local parks and trails in Virginia that offer evidence-based chronic disease programs that include physical activity, such as WWE. Success Story: Oregon Health Division Physical Activity Referrals

 

The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) partnered with Comagine Health, a quality improvement organization certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, to develop a health care provider toolkit aimed at increasing physical activity counseling and community clinical linkages to Arthritis Appropriate Evidence-Based Interventions (AAEBIs).   Beginning in May 2021, Comagine Health formed an advisory committee and conducted an environmental scan to identify needs and opportunities for better integrating counseling or screening prompts and referrals for AAEBIs into Electronic Health Records (EHRs). With this information and the work of the advisory committee, OHA is now empowered to create community and clinical linkages.   OHA builds upon the work previously done to increase physical activity for people living with arthritis and to increase the use of EHR prompts for providers to counsel and refer patients to evidence-based programs.   Contact: eerck_ic@chronicdisease.org

New Arthritis Foundation Campaign: “We Journey Together”   The Arthritis Foundation recently kicked off its new awareness campaign “We Journey Together” in support of the over 1 in 4 Americans living with arthritis, the nation’s number one cause of disability — and the people who love them. This campaign aims to create connections and combat isolation within the arthritis community.   Launched at the start of Arthritis Awareness Month, the campaign has the objective of creating connections for the arthritis community — for both patients and caregivers — in the month of May and beyond.   Contact: Margo@MindfulKreative.com New Recommendation for Parks, Trails, and Greenways   A new systematic review from The Community Preventive Services Task Force shows improvements to park, trail, and greenway infrastructure, combined with additional interventions such as structured programs or transportation connections, increase physical activity. See the Community Preventive Services Task Force recommendation for more information.   NACCD Webinar: SHARPs   WATCH: “Collaborating with Community Resource Referral Platforms and Integrated Health and Social Care Networks” — a webinar by the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors Arthritis Technical Assistance, May 3, 2022.   This webinar informed state and national partners of various integrated social health access referral platforms (SHARPs). SHARPs are a new type of technology platform used by health care providers and payers to refer patients to community-based organizations for services to address health-related social needs.   Webinar attendees learned about the experiences state and local partners have had with using community resource referral platforms. Additionally, participants discussed opportunities to address the social determinants of health to improve arthritis management and the quality of life for people with arthritis, through IT solutions.
