Science hit another milestone in xenotransplantation
Why it matters: Earlier this year, we shared a story about the
first pig-to-human
heart transplant, a process known as xenotransplantation. Now,
scientists at New York University have gone to the other side, successfully
transplanting two genetically engineered pig hearts into recently deceased
humans. The achievement is seen as the latest advance toward solving America's
organ shortage. It also could lead to the development of a clinical protocol
that would offer an alternative supply of organs for people with
life-threatening heart disease.
