The euro and US dollar were neck-and-neck
Why it matters: Europe's economic outlook has recently been
marred by rising fuel costs and inflation. The prospect of Russia cutting off
gas to Europe this winter doesn't help. And now, for the first time since
November 2002, the euro has neared parity with the US dollar. That means
European companies and consumers will pay more for imports while European
exports become less expensive in international markets.
