Scientists studied ties between long COVID, suicide
risk

Why it matters: Millions of people may be suffering from
long-term, debilitating effects of COVID-19, and researchers with the NIH and
the UK's data-collection agency have launched studies into a potential link
between long COVID and suicide risk, including whether SARS-CoV-2 changes the
brain's biology and raises the probability. "What we do know is that
persons with chronic illnesses are susceptible to suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts
and suicide completion," said Richard Gallagher, an associate professor of
child psychiatry who is working on the NIH's RECOVER study of long COVID.
