Two-and-a-half
years after the pandemic started, the money available for emergency rental
assistance in Dallas is gone, at least for now.
The program
allowed renters who were short on money to apply for up to 18 months of relief,
provided that they met certain guidelines. An online application portal was set
up by the city in early 2021, and more than 17,000 applications were submitted.
(A little under 10,000 of all of those received help, just about 60 percent of
the demand.)
The city
received $40 million in one round, and $52 million in the second.
The
pandemic revealed both short-term and long-term solutions when it comes to the
need for emergency rent assistance. But now, the city won't have federal help
to achieve it.
