In its first-quarter earnings
call held earlier this month, UnitedHealthcare CEO Dirk McMahon said the
company is beginning to look at re-entering some Affordable Care Act exchange
markets, a move that may be appealing to several insurers amid the financial
fallout of the COVID-19 pandmeic. "We're still in the process of going
through market by market, evaluating relative efficiency of our network, our
ability to compete, and states where we would like to extend Medicaid,"
McMahon said. United currently offers exchange coverage in just three states —
Massachusetts, Nevada and New York — a far cry from its 34-state presence in
2016. About 153,000 people are currently enrolled in United's ACA plans.
