Seven Facts to Know about Women’s Health
Women face diverse and unique
health concerns across the lifespan which may affect their overall health
and wellness. Learn how some of these health conditions and life challenges
impact the lives of women and girls each year.
Progress Toward Achieving and Sustaining Maternal
and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination — Worldwide, 2000–2020
In 1989, the World Health
Assembly endorsed elimination of neonatal tetanus; the activity was
relaunched in 1999 as the maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination (MNTE)
initiative, targeting 59 priority countries. This report summarizes
progress toward achieving and sustaining MNTE during 2000–2020 and updates
a previous report.
Higher Prevalence of Hysterectomy Among Rural
Women than Urban Women: Implications for Measures of Disparities in Uterine
and Cervical Cancers
Using data from a large
population-based survey, this study assessed whether hysterectomy
prevalence varies by rural or urban residence and whether the relationship
between hysterectomy prevalence and rurality varies by race or ethnicity.
Women's Intergenerational Intimate Partner
Violence and Household Child Abuse in Burma (Myanmar)
Intimate partner violence (IPV)
and child abuse are prevalent in Burma. Using data from the 2015-2016
Demographic and Health Survey, this study evaluated the pathways between
women's exposure to IPV, attitudes toward IPV, and household child
discipline practices, and assessed whether intergenerational cycles and
co-occurrence of violence in the household vary by pivotal life events and
development stages.
Predicting Emergence of Primary and Secondary
Syphilis Among Women of Reproductive Age in US Counties
The objective of this study was
to identify US counties with elevated risk for emergence of primary and
secondary syphilis among women of reproductive age.
Group Antenatal Care for Improving Retention of
Adolescent and Young Pregnant Women Living with HIV (AYWLH) in Kenya
This study evaluated a
differentiated service model for pregnant and postnatal AYWLH at seven
health facilities in western Kenya aimed at improving retention in
antiretroviral treatment services.
Maternity Care Practices and Breastfeeding
Intentions at One Month Among Low-Income Women
Maternity care practices have
been linked with higher chances of meeting breastfeeding intentions. This
report examines this association with data from the Special Supplemental
Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children Infant and Toddler
Feeding Practices Study-2.
Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination and Cervical
Cancer Screening Coverage in Managed Care Plans — United States, 2018
The purpose of this study was
to describe 2018 National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Healthcare
Effectiveness Data and Information Set data for the United States on HPV
vaccination and cervical cancer screening from commercial preferred
provider organizations, commercial health maintenance organizations (HMOs),
and Medicaid HMOs.
Factors Associated with Active Syphilis Among Men
and Women Aged 15 years and Older in the Zimbabwe Population-Based HIV
Impact Assessment (ZIMPHIA) 2015–2016
This analysis uses data from
ZIMPHIA (2015–2016) to describe factors associated with active syphilis
among men and women ages 15 years and older.
Urinary Phthalate and DINCH Metabolite
Concentrations and Gradations of Maternal Glucose Intolerance
Research suggests a link
between endocrine disrupting chemicals, such as phthalates, and gestational
diabetes mellitus. In this study, phthalate biomarkers were measured among
a cohort of 606 women during each trimester of pregnancy to evaluate
associations between biomarkers and maternal glycemic status.
Recent Incarceration Exposure Among Parents of
Live-Born Infants and Maternal and Child Health
The objectives of this study
were to estimate the prevalence of recent incarceration exposure among
women with a recent live birth and assess the relationship between
incarceration exposure and maternal and child health.
Prevalence of Overactive Bladder Symptoms Among
Women With Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome
Symptoms of urinary frequency,
urgency, and urinary leakage are characteristic of overactive bladder
syndrome. However, frequency and urgency symptoms are also present in most
patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). This is
a prospective study of women with IC/BPS diagnosed clinically in the
Veterans Affairs Health Care system.
Identification of Profiles and Determinants of
Maternal Pregnancy Urinary Biomarkers of Phthalates and Replacements in the
Illinois Kids Development Study
Exposure to phthalates has been
associated with adverse maternal and child health outcomes, including
preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and preterm birth. This study evaluated
13 maternal sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, enrollment year, and
conception season as determinants of exposure biomarkers of phthalates and
their replacements in 482 pregnant women from the Illinois Kids Development
Study.
Economic Evaluation of Zika Contraception Access
Network in Puerto Rico During the 2016-17 Zika Virus Outbreak
This study estimated the
cost-effectiveness of the Zika Contraception Access Network (Z-CAN), an
emergency response intervention that provided women in Puerto Rico with
access to the full range of reversible contraception at no cost and
compared results with a pre-implementation hypothetical cost-effectiveness
analysis (CEA).
Periconceptional Folic Acid Use Prevents Both
Rare and Common Neural Tube Defects in China
Neural tube defects (NTDs)
encompass a variety of distinct types. This study assessed if the
preventive effect of folic acid varied by NTD type and infant sex.
Access to Contraceptive Services in Puerto Rico:
An Analysis of Policy and Practice Change Strategies, 2015-2018
This analysis reports on the
identified policy and practice change strategies to increase access to or
provision of contraceptive services in Puerto Rico between 2015 and 2018.
The Positive Effect of Malaria IPTp-SP on
Birthweight is Mediated by Gestational Weight Gain But Modifiable by
Maternal Carriage of Enteric Pathogens
Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP),
given for intermittent preventive therapy of malaria in pregnancy, is one
of few existing interventions that improves outcomes of both mother and
baby despite widespread SP-resistant malaria. This study analyzed whether
the beneficial effect of SP on birthweight is mediated by SP activity on
maternal factors, including increased gestational weight gain and
antibiotic activity on pathogens in the maternal gut.
COVID-19
Impact on Women
Investigating the Impact of COVID-19 During
Pregnancy
CDC is supporting multiple
efforts to increase our understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant
women and infants. Data collected as part of these efforts can help direct
public health action and inform clinical guidance for the care of affected
pregnant women and their infants.
