Schools should continue masking for the rest of the school year, CDC says

Schools should continue masking and using other coronavirus prevention strategies for at least the rest of the 2020-2021 school year, the CDC said Saturday.

Since children under age 12 aren’t yet eligible to receive a Covid-19 vaccine, the current strategies will be needed throughout the school year because students won't be fully vaccinated by the end of the academic year, the CDC said.

Schools will also need time to make potential policy adjustments, it added. The agency said it will update its guidance for schools in the coming weeks.

While he said he can “almost guarantee” that most schools will require unvaccinated people to wear masks on campus, Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that in-person learning should be a priority.

“First of all, the schools should be open, face-to-face, in person classes in the fall. We absolutely have to do that," Fauci said.
