Symptoms CDC says to watch for following Johnson & Johnson vaccine

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that people who experience certain symptoms after receiving the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine seek immediate medical treatment.

These symptoms include sudden, severe headache, backache, new neurological symptoms, severe abdominal pain, shortness of breath, leg swelling, tiny red spots on the skin, or new or easy bruising.

Last week, the CDC and the US Food and Drug Administration recommended pausing the use of J&J’s vaccine after six reports of rare and severe blood brain clots. The agencies issued guidance to doctors about not using the common anti-coagulant heparin.

Similar issues have not been reported following the administration of the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccines.

The agencies hope the pause gives scientists time to review data and determine whether the vaccine is actually linked to the blood clots and, if so, whether recommendations on who should receive it should change.

On Tuesday, the European Medicines Agency said there is a possible link between the rare blood clots and the J&J vaccine, but the overall benefits of the shot outweigh the risks. The EMA now requires J&J's vaccine to have a warning for use in the EU stating that “unusual blood clots with low blood platelets” are a potential “very rare side effect."
