According to a new GOBankingRates’ report, 12 cities in the Lone Star State are among the top 50 cities in the U.S. for job seekers over the age of 50 – and three of the top 10 are located in North Texas.
GOBankingRates determined the top cities for the demographic based on unemployment information among certain ages ranges, in addition to the city’s total population over the age of 50, livability score, cost-of-living index, annual expenditures and median household income. Key metrics in the report includes the cities where the unemployment rate for those over 50 is lowest and includes details of the city’s unemployment rate between the range of ages of 45 and 54, 55 and 59, 60 and 64, 65 and 74, and 75 and older.
"Ultimately, the study allows older Americans to get a sense of which cities offer low levels of unemployment as well as cheaper costs and solid amenities," the report said.
Among the 12 cities in the Lone Star State featured in the top 50, seven are located in North Texas, three of which ranked in the top 10.
Frisco ranked highest at No. 5, while McKinney and Plano were listed as Nos. 7 and 10 respectively. Two other Texas cities ranked in the top ten: Amarillo at No. 6 and Lubbock at No. 8.
The four other North Texas cities ranked in the top 50 were Arlington at No. 24, Grand Prairie at No. 31, Irving at No. 39, and Fort Worth at No. 42.
Frisco, which came in fifth, had some of the lowest unemployment rates across the five age ranges GOBankingsRates analyzed. On average, the unemployment rate was 3.8 percent for any of the age ranges.
Among all the cities from Texas in GOBankingRate's rankings, Frisco had the highest cost-of-living score with a 120, according to the report's index. The report used 100 as its average base point in the report.
In terms of livability, out of 100, Frisco scored a 92.
The remaining three Texas cities among the top 50 include Laredo at No. 16, Corpus Christi at No. 22, and Austin at No. 30.
The two Texas cities with the highest percentages of population over the age of 50 were Corpus Christi at 31.53 percent and Plano with 32.93 percent.
The top ranked city in the country for job seekers over 50 was Overland Park, Kan., according to GOBankingRates.
