Facilities across America show their spirit
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, VA Medical Centers across the country – including the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System in Prescott, Arizona (pictured above) – hosted Pink Out! events to support women Veterans and connect them with VA’s health care services.
Veterans had the opportunity to speak with health care providers about services offered at their medical centers, breast cancer prevention and more.
Below is a photo gallery of how several VA facilities recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
VA Western New York Healthcare System – Buffalo, NY
VA’s Western New York Healthcare System promoted breast cancer awareness and 3D mammography during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The center published a Facebook video featuring Dr. Michelle Ding, chief of radiology, encouraging screening for breast cancer and promoting the Buffalo VA Medical Center’s 3D mammography technology with walk-in appointments.
Also, the staff wore pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Radiology staff provided information at a table in the lobby about breast cancer prevention and services offered at the center.
Cheyenne VA Medical Center – Cheyenne, WY
The Cheyenne VA Medical Center held its 10th annual Pink Out! Day on October 17. The Women Veterans Health Program also held an outreach event on the same day. Employees and Veterans decorated rocks to promote breast cancer awareness with the goal of placing them out in the community. The information table also provided screening guidelines and pocket calendars with health information for Veterans.
VA Central Iowa Health Care System – Des Moines, IA
On October 18, the VA Central Iowa Health Care System hosted their Pink Out! event. The medical center had a “Survivor Tree” and a “Remembrance Tree” for attendees. Visitors and Veterans were able to write their names or the names of loved ones on the hearts and ribbons and put them on the trees. There were also two bulletin boards in the patient waiting areas with educational materials on breast cancer.
VA encourages women Veterans to get regular checkups with their providers. Visit VA.gov for more information about women’s health care.
