Try one of these four supplements for additional relief from your
arthritis symptoms.
- Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption, which helps with bone growth and
repair. You may already be getting enough vitamin D through sun exposure
and your diet. But if you’re deficient, a supplement might help improve
your joint symptoms and overall health.
- Few studies have been done in
humans, but research done on other animals shows that fish oils rich in omega-3 fatty acids may
help protect your joints from cartilage breakdown or
reduce its severity.
- Use of chondroitin sulfate has shown significant
decrease in pain from hand OA and improvement
in hand function, similar in magnitude to using NSAIDs, but with fewer
risks.
- Glucosamine is a natural compound found in
healthy cartilage. In supplements, it’s harvested from shellfish and can
be made in the lab. It can provide some pain relief for
patients with OA of the knee, hip and spine.
Talk with your doctor or
pharmacist about which supplements might help improve your OA.
