If you want to change the world, start off by
making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished
the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will
encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. And by the end of
the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.
U.S. Navy Adm. William H. McCraven
Today is when we honor
and commemorate the countless courageous individuals who have sacrificed their
lives for our freedom. Their sacrifice, commitment, and bravery in the face of
danger protects the principles of our democracy and insulates us from harm at
home. They are not just soldiers--they are the real warriors and heroes among
us. They are parents, children, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, sisters,
brothers, relatives, and friends. Their commitment to serving preserves our
liberty and daily way of life. As soldiers, many of them show the qualities of
true leaders.
When I think of what
makes a real leader today, these are the characteristics I think of: being
brave, big-hearted, benevolent, and beyond measure.
BE BRAVE: To be brave really means to be BOLD. It
doesn't mean having any fear. It means going forward, despite it. It means
being obedient by connecting to your higher power. This allows you to silence
the noise around you, to listen to the voice within you. It also means being a
leader-- having the ability and strength to make tough decisions quickly and
decisively-and not being afraid to be different or think out of the box.
BE BIG-HEARTED: You cannot lead people if you don't love
people. Now, more than ever, you have to show you care about your team members'
needs and what matters to them individually, as opposed to just what matters to
your company.
BE BENEVOLENT: You must be compassionate and giving. Leaders
must show empathy and sympathy toward their team members and show real concern
for their welfare. Leaders need to show they will consistently support their
teams.
BE BEYOND MEASURE: Leaders must take action and go the extra
mile. This means having a do whatever it takes attitude. Leaders must be
committed no matter what, and employees must feel it. It's about the big
picture.
So, as you remember
those who gave their lives for our country, remember that they all were brave,
big-hearted, benevolent, and went beyond measure to ensure our freedom and make
the world a better place. Let their spirit inspire your leadership.
