Why it matters: Some experts say the industrial global food
system is unsustainable. That problem is exacerbated by a dearth of accepted
methods to calculate the true costs and advantages of actions that could make
the system more sustainable. But a new framework from the World Business
Council for Sustainable Development accounts for the hidden health and
socioeconomic costs of food production. Having a more holistic understanding of
the complete costs could help governments reach their sustainability goals.
