The Medicare Access and CHIP
(Children’s Health Insurance Program) Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015
requires CMS to remove Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from all Medicare cards
by April 2019. A new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the
SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) as the identifier on all
Medicare cards.
CMS will begin sending new
Medicare cards with the MBI to beneficiaries in April 2018.
As a reminder, the following User
Guides were updated to reflect the change from HICN to the new MBI. Please
refer to chapter 1 of the guides for a summary of the changes:
