A morning-after-style pill for STDs showed promise
Why it matters: More than 2.5 million cases of chlamydia,
gonorrhea, and syphilis were reported in 2021, according to the CDC. One
possible solution to the uptick in sexually transmitted infections is the oral
antibiotic doxycycline, which in a recent study
prevented the acquisition of sexually transmitted infections when tested among
men who have sex with men and transgender women who took the medication within
72 hours of having sex without a condom. "Specifically, the post-exposure
approach, termed doxy-PEP, resulted in a two-thirds reduction in the incidence
of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia," the NIH said.
There's a catch,
though: Doxycycline does come with other risks. Just
Google "doxycycline
ruined my life" to see a few.
