Blues CEOs Banked $110 Million in 2016 Pay, With Anthem, Mich. Blue Heads Topping List

With $1.45 million in salary and $15 million in additional compensation, Anthem, Inc. CEO Joseph Swedish banked more than any other Blues plan CEO in 2016, according to data compiled by AIS Health. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan CEO Daniel Loepp ran a distant second but easily topped the list of non-profit Blues CEOs, with $1.53 million in pay and $9.37 million in bonuses and other incentives for total compensation of $10.9 million in 2016.

In all, CEOs representing 25 Blues plans earned a collective $109.56 million in 2016 salary and other compensation, which includes bonuses, retirement contributions and other incentives, the data show. The research team for The AIS Guide to Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans* compiled the information from data supplied by individual Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans, state insurance department documents and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings.
