p.m.: Revised to include new cases from Denton County.
Dallas County
reported 105 more cases of coronavirus Sunday, as well as its 82nd death from
COVID-19.
Sunday’s case count
brings the county’s total to 3,014 since the first two were reported March 10.
In the past week,
Dallas County has reported an average of 83.7 cases a day. The previous week
averaged more than 100 a day.
On Saturday, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins
pointed out the lower weekly average, attributing it to the emphasis on social
distancing and stay-at-home orders, which were extended until May 15.
That extension could
be overruled with a statewide executive order, according to Gov. Greg Abbott.
The state started lifting some coronavirus-related restrictions last
week, including opening “retail-to-go” options and
state parks.
Sunday was also the
first day in-person worship was allowed under new statewide regulations.
Jenkins, in a written statement, said “almost all faith leaders in Dallas
County” were maintaining closures.
“They are a testament
to putting health over wealth,” Jenkins said. “We must all continue to make
smart personal responsibility decisions as Texas is ordered to open up.
Government can allow things that public health says are unreasonably unsafe,
but they can’t force your participation.”
The latest reported death
was a man in his 50s, according to Dallas County Health and Human Services. He
was found dead in his Dallas home. Of the county’s 82 deaths, about 40% are
associated with long-term care facilities.
