Study: Food insecurity increases for patients with CVD
About 38% of Americans with cardiovascular disease were food
insecure in 2017-2019, an increase over 20 years earlier when 16.3% of CVD
patients had limited access to food, according to a study published in JAMA
Cardiology. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey, researchers found a bi-directional relationship with food
insecurity increasing the risk for CVD events, like myocardial infarction or
stroke, which could then impact financial status and perpetuate food
insecurity.
