US suicide rates up nearly 4% last year
The number of US deaths by suicide increased nearly 4% from 45,979
in 2020 to 47,646 deaths last year, ending a two-year decline after close to
two decades of increase, according to provisional data issued by the CDC's
National Center for Health Statistics. The age-adjusted suicide rate increased
by 2% among women and by around 3% among men, while suicide rates rose by 8%
among men ages 15 to 24 and 16% among girls ages 10 to 14, though the latter
figure could not be measured for statistical significance.
