The world has been
sent home to work. The 180-degree shift in operating practices has been
fascinating to watch. There are some wonderful stories of leadership, four of
which I recently shared in this Forbes column.
Upon reflection,
I’m one of the fortunate ones. I’ve got nearly 20 years of experience leading
remote employees and being a work-from-home team member.
Not everyone has
this type of experience. I feel quite lucky.
Since 2002 I’ve led
teams and people located across the globe in senior positions I’ve held at
TELUS, SAP and Business Objects.
Since 2008 I’ve
been a mobile worker, which means I work half the time from the comforts of my
home, all the while leading teams, people, projects, and me.
I’m not trying to
be a pompous, pretentious fool–after all, I’m Canadian–but I’ve got a LOT of
experience working and leading remotely.
This is why during
the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 (and the disease known as COVID-19) I’m sharing as
much as I can about remote leadership, remote teams, and being a remote
employee.
You can
access two free toolkits off
my personal site and use as you see fit in your organizations. There are 21
videos, multiple job aids, slides, letters, and articles. (There’s also a free
ePub version of one of my books.)
Here are a few
examples of the videos, each of them between 5 and 10 minutes in length.
Leading Remote Teams
101
For
many leaders, the concept of working from home is as foreign as flying to Mars,
let alone having to still effectively lead the team. (The team being newbies to
working from home on a full-time basis, too.) This video explores the concepts
of trust, more frequent check-ins, sharing, building community, and yes having
some fun!
How to Maintain
Productivity and Performance
You
and the team may be working from home, isolated from one another, but that
doesn’t mean your organization is shutting down. Work has to get done,
deliverables are expected, and goals ought to be met. How? How do you maintain
productivity and performance? I’ve developed six key techniques that may not
100% ensure both aspects are kept up, but it will get you ahead of the curve.
The Importance of
Staying Connected
We
are human beings. We need human contact. Just because you’re now working from
home doesn’t mean you need to forget about the necessity of being connected to
others. What to do? Check out this video for some tips and tricks on how to
stay connected with others.
How
To Access?
You
can visit each toolkit site separately.
PS. Oh, and my 4th book is now available for
pre-order: LEAD. CARE. WIN. How to
Become a Leader Who Matters. (It
sounds timely!)
