Faceless coronavirus death tally obscures rich life stories like that of Dallas’ ‘Pastor Laz’

Commentary from Metro columnist Sharon Grigsby:

Just because you haven’t personally encountered COVID-19 doesn’t make it any less real. It just means you’ve been lucky.

Amid this pandemic’s killing spree, which now stands at about 660 North Texans, I’ve wondered whether the inclination to distance from this reality — or even deny it — is fueled by the facelessness of the disease.

Missing from these death tallies is any inkling of the lives and legacies of the people whose stories were cut short by the coronavirus and whose families are grieving their absence.
