Senate committee advances bill to help homeless veterans as national eviction moratorium is set to end

The Building Solutions for Veterans Experiencing Homelessness Act of 2021 would extend indefinitely the extra resources and flexibility given during the pandemic to the federal, state and local agencies that provide services to homeless veterans.

VA implements coronavirus vaccine mandate for medical staff

The department is the first federal agency to implement a vaccine mandate. Employees have until Sept. 20 to be fully vaccinated, VA Secretary Denis McDonough said in a statement.

Senate committee advances bill extending mammogram access to female vets

The Supporting Expanded Review for Veterans in Combat Environments bill, introduced by Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., would extend access to mammograms for all female veterans who served in areas with burn pits or other toxic exposures, regardless of their age, symptoms or family history.

Lawmakers urge National Archives to digitize records, clear backlog of veterans’ requests

In a letter Monday, six members of the House committee urged David Ferriero, the archivist for the United States, to apply for funding through the Technology Modernization Fund to help with the digitization efforts. The fund is intended to help federal agencies with technological challenges.

Mother of murdered veteran manages website for victims to find her own solace

In 2018, Terrie Boley decided to start a website about her daughter, 36-year-old Candance Boley, an Army and Marine Corps veteran who was murdered in Killeen, Texas, 10 years ago this month — a place where people could read about Candy’s life and death, a place where she could be remembered and seen. Boley quickly realized there were other mothers and families out there just like her who were waiting for closure for their own loved ones.

Capitol officer, Iraq War veteran at Jan. 6 hearing: ‘I could have lost my life that day ... many times’

Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell said he was more scared on Jan. 6 than he was during his Army tour of duty in Iraq. He said when he arrived home at 4 a.m. on Jan. 7, he could not even hug his wife because his uniform was so soaked in chemical irritants he had been sprayed with. He faces multiple surgeries from his injuries and at least a year of rehabilitation.
