Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Resources for Prevention
and Care
Fetal alcohol spectrum
disorders (FASDs) are a group of conditions that can occur in a person who
was exposed to alcohol before birth. FASDs have lifelong effects, including
problems with behavior and learning as well as physical problems. FASDs are
preventable if a developing baby is not exposed to alcohol. CDC and its
partners have resources to help prevent alcohol use during pregnancy and
provide care for children with FASDs and their families.
Addressing Racial Disparities in
Pregnancy-Related Deaths: An Analysis of Maternal Mortality-Related Federal
Legislation, 2017–2021
There has been increasing
national attention to the issue of racial disparities in pregnancy-related
deaths. Federal legislation can support approaches at multiple levels of
intervention to improve maternal health. As part of the CDC Policy Academy,
a team of CDC staff completed a policy analysis to determine the approaches
addressed in federal legislation to reduce racial disparities in
pregnancy-related deaths.
Breastfeeding Report Card, United States, 2022
CDC’s Breastfeeding Report
Card, 2022, provides a compilation of data on breastfeeding practices and
supports in all states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
Pregnancy-Related Deaths: Data from Maternal
Mortality Review Committees in 36 US States, 2017–2019
Data on 1,018 pregnancy-related
deaths among residents of 36 states from 2017–2019 were shared with CDC
through the Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA).
Sexual and Reproductive Health Needs and
Practices of Female Sex Workers in Papua New Guinea: Findings from a Biobehavioral
Survey Kauntim Mi Tu ('Count Me Too')
Little research has explored
the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) experience of female sex workers
(FSW), including girls aged < 18 years who are commercially sexually
exploited (CSE), in Papua New Guinea (PNG). This study describes the SRH
history of FSW and CSE girls and factors associated with their use of
moderately or highly effective contraceptive methods in three settings in
PNG.
Burden of Malaria in Pregnancy among Adolescent
Girls Compared to Adult Women in 5 Sub-Saharan African countries: A
Secondary Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis of 2 Clinical Trials
Malaria is among the top causes
of death in adolescent girls (10 to 19 years) globally. Adolescent
motherhood is associated with increased risk of adverse maternal and
neonatal outcomes. The interaction of malaria, adolescence, and pregnancy
is especially relevant in malaria endemic areas, where rates of adolescent
pregnancy are high. However, data on burden of malaria among adolescent
girls are limited. This study aimed at investigating whether adolescent
girls were at a greater risk of experiencing malaria-related outcomes in
pregnancy-parasitaemia and clinical disease-than adult women.
Prevalence of Microcephaly and Zika Virus
Infection in a Pregnancy Cohort in Kenya, 2017-2019
Zika virus (ZIKV), first
discovered in Uganda in 1947, re-emerged globally in 2013 and was later
associated with microcephaly and other birth defects. This study determined
the incidence of ZIKV infection and its association with adverse pregnancy
and fetal outcomes in a pregnancy cohort in Kenya.
Toward Elimination of Mother-to-Child
Transmission of HIV in Malawi: Findings from the Malawi Population-based
HIV Impact Assessment (2015-2016)
Malawi spearheaded the
development and implementation of Option B+ for prevention of
mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), providing life-long
antiretroviral therapy (ART) for all HIV-positive pregnant and
breastfeeding women. This study used data from the 2015-2016 Malawi
Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (MPHIA) to estimate progress toward
90-90-90 targets (90% of those with HIV know their HIV-positive status; of
these, 90% are receiving ART; and of these, 90% have viral load suppression
[VLS]) for HIV-positive women reporting a live birth in the previous 3
years.

CDC Authors: COVID-19 Impact on Women
Geographic Examination of COVID-19 Test Percent
Positivity and Proportional Change in Cancer Screening Volume, National
Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic
led to significant declines in cancer screening, including among women
served by the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program
(NBCCEDP). This study examined the spatial association between state-based
COVID-19 test percent positivity and proportional change in NBCCEDP
screening volume.
