Kent Sullivan
Insurance Commissioner
You now may
be feeling like no part of “normal” life has been untouched by the
COVID-19 outbreak. At the Texas Department of Insurance, the past few
weeks have been a whirlwind of activity – from frequent communications
with state leaders, other agencies, and the industry to making sure we
can continue to serve you while protecting our employees.
We’ve issued
almost daily guidance and updates to the insurance industry. We asked
health plans to waive consumer costs for testing, and companies quickly
responded. We approved an emergency rule to make it easier for your
doctor to use telemedicine. We hosted a teleconference with insurance
industry representatives Friday, and we announced temporary changes to
licensing rules. (You’ll find information of these and other actions on
our coronavirus resource page.)
You can
expect to see announcements in the coming days to help Texans with a
variety of health care and insurance concerns. And we’ll adjust our rules
and processes where appropriate to make sure your insurer is focused on
helping you and responding to this pandemic.
We continue
to provide essential services, answer
your questions, and work through issues as they develop. The
work we’ve done over the past two years to modernize, reduce reliance on
paper processes, and move our staff to laptops has been a tremendous help
in transitioning quickly to a remote workforce. (See photos)
Across the
agency, the industry, and all of Texas, there’s a sense of urgency,
compassion, and flexibility. Like you, we’re focused on the health of
those around us, and we intend to do our best to be part of the solution.
