Scientists had sharply criticized the
World Health Organization for creating confusion on the issue, given the
far-ranging public policy implications. They also said the comments did not
reflect the current scientific research.

The W.H.O. walked back an earlier assertion that asymptomatic transmission of the coronavirus is “very rare,” saying it was a “misunderstanding.”
